TOSS ALI Training Event – Featuring Dr. Gene Kerns, Renaissance
Please join this informative training event to hear Dr. Gene Kerns share best practices for helping students achieve literacy growth at every grade level. Participants will explore a previously unconsidered phase of literacy acquisition that holds the promise of transforming what we accomplish in terms of student literacy.
Topics will include:
· Why many students experience declining reading growth after grade four and what to do about it
· Emerging concepts from cognitive science that provide new insights into literacy acquisition
· How educators can empower students to teach themselves essential elements of literacy
· The most efficient way to help students build a robust vocabulary
· The undeniable, but often overlooked, role of background knowledge in literacy
Dr. Kerns will share insights from Daniel Willingham's newest book, The Reading Mind, and Mike Schmoker's landmark work, Focus. His presentation will also highlight data from PISA and NAEP, as well as insights from the Education Endowment Foundation (UK) and a variety of other researchers.
